BACKGROUND OF THE NEW JUABEN NORTH MUNICIPAL ASSEMBY

The New Juaben North Municipal Assembly was carved out of the erstwhile New Juaben Municipal Assembly in 2017 with the Promulgation of Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2302 of December 2017 and the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) with the administration block located at Effiduase, Koforidua.

The New Juaben North Municipal is located within the South- East part of the Eastern Region of Ghana. The Municipal shares boundaries to the North by Abuakwa North, to the South by New Juaben South, to the East by Yilo Krobo, to the West by Suhum. It stretches between Latitude 60°70’W and Longitude 10°30’’ and 00°30’E. The municipal area has a total land area of 106 square kilometers.

From table 1 above, there were only 15 Environmental Health Officers in the Municipal Assembly but one has been transferred out of the Municipality. The distribution of Environmental Health Officers to the total population is hugely unmatched. It is therefore difficult for officers to cover the whole municipality in order to ensure proper sanitation and hygiene throughout the year. Efforts should be made to post more Environmental Health Officers in order to achieve the objective of ensuring proper sanitation and hygiene in the municipality.

  1. Transport:
The unit depends on the Municipal Assembly for the release of vehicle for monitoring Environmental Health activities. Meanwhile, a motorbike designated for use by the unit has broken-down and is yet to be repaired.
  2. Tools and Equipment:
Management made tremendous efforts to provide some tools and equipment to the Unit for Environmental Health and Sanitation activities. However, more tools, equipment and machinery are required to extend environmental health and sanitation services.
