Farmers in the New Juaben North Municipality have receive training on the modernized methods of cultivation in the Agriculture sector. This initiative has come as a result of research by Research Extension Laison Committee (RELC) to find out some challenges on their field and how to tackle them effectively. The training brought together 20 farmers from the municipality were engaged in cereals and legumes, roots and tubers, fruits and tree crops, poultry and livestock farming.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon .Comfort Asante stipulated on the importance of being a part of these kinds of training to equip farmers on effective and proper ways of cultivation to help achieve higher yield. She stressed that this will in turn improve on their financial obligations to themselves, their families and nation as a whole.
Madam Mercy Oparebea Adobea, the Head of the Extension Officers at New Juaben North Assembly took participants through cereals and legumes constraints, possible causes and some effective solutions.
She cautioned farmers about the time of planting seeds, depth of planting holes, soil nutrient deficiency among others.
Hajiah Yusif Habiba, Eastern Regional Director of Agric, cautioned farmers about the application of chemicals to their crops and its effect on people. She therefore urged farmers to contact their immediate Extension Officers in their farming areas for assistance and directions on buying any chemicals for their crops.
In her discussion, she said inability of crop to bear fruits is normally due to diseases and insect infestation and source of planting material. Farmers were advised to apply systematic chemicals and also acquire good planting materials.
The Municipal Veterinary Officer, Dr. Juliana Kyerewah Adu, said the main causes of poultry is normally inactive birds and pox on the face.
She stressed that, possible causes of these diseases are; malnutrition, worms, and weather conditions.
She further mentioned that, some possible solutions to such problems include, providing adequate balance feed, deworming of farm animals, vaccination and early treatment when the need be.
Present were the New Juaben North Municipal Agric Director, Mr. Emmanuel Amenu, Municipal Planning Officer, Madam Florence Nartey, New Juaben North Agric sub –committee chairman, Hon. Wilson Baah Marfo and other Agric officers from the Regional office.
