NEW JUABEN NORTH MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY
DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
Introduction
Most Women in the Agric development keep local breeds of birds and extensive system of poultry. These type of birds, though they have less mortality rate, they have low income generation, due to their small sizes.
Cockerels on the other hand are exotic birds, but hardened, bigger in sizes, and also have less mortality rate. They can be used as breeding stock to cross the local female birds to obtain hybrid breed of birds which will be bigger in sizes, with low mortality. With their sizes, they have higher income generation than that of the purely local poultry birds.
Purpose
The main purpose of the project is to introduce twenty eight (28) cockerels birds for seven (7) women farmers as breeding stock to improve and multiply upon their local birds for higher income.
Activity
As part of the budgeted activity, the department ordered and purchased twenty eight (28) cockerels from Bunso, in the Abuakwa North District on the 10th of October, 2022. The birds were given to seven (7) women selected across the municipality, where each woman had 4 birds as breeding stock. They were trained by the Municipal Veterinary Officers as to the health and medication for the birds. The seven women were also selected across the Municipality so as to use their project as a kind of demonstration to other farmers in the locality so that they will see the good results and be adopted by other farmers.
Cost of Project
- Cost of cockerels = Ghc 840.00
- Fuel for running = Ghc 660.00
- Total = GHC 1,500.00
Conclusion
Twenty Eight birds of cockerels were purchased by the department of agriculture and given to seven female famers as a breeding stock to multiply their local breeds. The project will go a long way to increase the population of the local poultry, and then bring more income and meat to the producer.
