Update on Critical Development and Poverty Issues

The main critical development and poverty issues prevalent in the New Juaben North Municipal are flooding, sand wining and nomadic herdsmen.

2.6.1 Flooding

The Municipality is prone to flooding. It is recorded every year with varying degrees of intensity. Due to this, the Environmental Health Unit and NADMO implemented activities in this Second quarter to reduce the Municipality’s vulnerability to flooding such as sensitization on proper disposal of solid waste, public education on flooding, removal of structures on water ways amongst dredging and desilting of major river bodies.

2.6.2 Sand Wining

Sand Wining occurs in the Municipality which affects agricultural production. It degrades a number of farmlands in some farming communities like Akwadum and Mpeam reducing the acreage of arable land available for farming.

2.6.3 Activities of nomadic herdsmen

Nomadic Herdsmen are present in Akwadum, Mpeam and Jumapo.  Their activities are causing destruction to farms in those areas. Activities of Herdsmen has been very intense in this Second  Quarter. Continues interventions by the security agencies is needed to bring the situation under control.

2.6.3 Livelihood Empowerment against Poverty Programme (LEAP)

The Municipality benefits from the Livelihood Empowerment against Poverty (LEAP) programme which directly targets the Aged and Orphans & Vulnerable Children (OVC).  cash were  transfers  to beneficiaries during the Second  Quarter.
